Dedicated to Hindu god Vishnu, the Chokkanathaswamy temple at Domlur is one of the most popular temples in Bangalore. The god here is also known as Chokkanatha Swami or Chokka Perumal. After staying in the affordable resorts in Bangalore, for day outing a visit to the temple is a must.

1. History
The Chokkanathaswamy temple is one of the oldest temples in Bangalore, dating back to the 10th century when Chola Kingdom flourished here.

2. Legends
Chola origin of the temple is clearly visible from the pilasters in the sanctum sanctorum and the walls besides the name of the god itself, Chokka Perumal. On a door frame, there is a Tamil inscription dating back to 1270 AD that states that the doors were donated by Alagiyar and another inscription says Poysala Vira Ramanada also made donations. Navaranga and pillars resembling Vijayanagara style were added later.

3. Architecture
The striking features of the Chola style of architecture include the beautifully crafted sculptures and statues along with large pillars. There are beautiful figures sculpted on the pillars one of which is Vishnu’s dashavatharas.

4. Festivals
Festivals are celebrated with great pomp and fervour. During April-May, annual temple car festivals are conducted. Special puja is organized on Ugadi days. People staying in lavish resorts in Bangalore, for team outing prefer to spend time in the temple during the festival times. On Vaikunta Ekadashi Day, Vishnu Deepam, Dhanur Masa Pooja and Thommal Sevai Alangaram are performed with great passion.
